Alice’s Restaurant [VHS]

You can get anything you want there, or so went Arlo Guthrie’s song, a lengthy monologue about a Thanksgiving dinner and how its aftermath kept Guthrie out of the Vietnam-era draft. Arthur Penn’s movie version, which stars Guthrie, James Broderick, and Pat Quinn, has a shambling, good-natured feel, much like Guthrie’s epic tall tale. But as it follows Guthrie’s adventures (he gets arrested for improper disposal of Thanksgiving garbage and the arrest renders him unfit for military service, in the draft board’s eyes), it also examines the freewheeling nature of relationships in that period–and the toll that freedom took on those relationships. Guthrie is a natural performer, particularly funny during the draft board sequence; but the heart of the film is Quinn and Broderick’s troubled marriage. –Marshall Fine

Pennsylvania Diners and other Roadside Restaurants [VHS]

In an age when every fast food place seems the same, diners have remained distinctive, fun places to stop, full of local flavor.

This program takes a look at several of the most interesting diners in Pennsylvania, and also considers a few other roadside restaurants (like the Midway Plaza on the PA Turnpike) that have interesting histories and reputations for good “home-cooked” food.

So get a cup of coffee. Have a seat. And come along as we visit great little restaurants from Wellsboro to Downingtown, from Milford to Conneaut Lake. Let’s go to Potato City, to the Melrose in Philly and to unforgettable little places from Pittsburgh to the Poconos. My Dinner With Andre (SP Mode)

The sheer audacity of My Dinner with Andre drew throngs of curious filmgoers who made the film the most talked-about art-house hit of 1981. After all, who’d ever heard of a movie consisting of nearly two hours of nonstop dinner conversation? Ah… but this isn’t just any conversation–it’s the kind of mesmerizing, soul-searching, life-affirming exploration that we feel privileged to listen to, and with unobtrusive style, director Louis Malle invites us to eavesdrop to our hearts’ and minds’ content. The film was written by two New Yorkers at the dinner table, noted playwright-actor Wallace Shawn and well-known stage director Andre Gregory, who essentially play themselves. They taped their conversations for several weeks and Shawn gradually shaped them into a scripted conversation, but you’d never know it from watching the movie. The talk flows and flows until you’re captivated by Gregory’s stories of world travel and spiritual quests in Poland, India, Tibet, the Sahara desert… the tales of a soul-searcher who’d dropped out of the theater world to rediscover his zest for living. Shawn plays the skeptic, the voice of reason, his feet on the ground but his own mind willing to soar. The cumulative effect of this conversation is almost hypnotic, and certainly plays into our eternal appetite for storytelling. Both primal and sophisticated, witty and profound, My Dinner with Andre is a film that can be savored over time, offering new revelations with each viewing as the listener-viewer develops his or her own appreciation of life’s great mysteries. –Jeff Shannon

Alice’s Restaurant: The Massacree Revisited (30th Anniversary Edition)

WHAT CAME AROUND – COMES AROUND AGAIN! TALK ABOUT TIMING!!! Though all the other songs on this album were rerecorded in the studo, in 1995 Arlo returned to the church near Stockbridge, Massachusetts where he originally wrote Alice’s Restaurant. On the 30th anniversary of the massacree, on Thanksgiving, before a live audience, in the place where it all began, he does “Alice” again with some historic footnotes added to the original, creating a return to the scene of the crime in ways that make this version of the famous record the one to stand for all time.

Alice’s Restaurant

While the title track may seem, by now, a rather obvious and nostalgic relic, we’d do well to remember that an entire post-baby boom generation has likely never heard it. At 18 minutes, the song remains one of the most hysterical things ever recorded, and many of its politcal barbs can still sting. But the record also contained two far more lyrical pieces: “Chillin’ of the Evening” and the gorgeous, sweeping “Highway in the Wind.” Some will turn to this countercultural classic for side one’s epic, but it’s the exceptional songs on side two that will offer finer rewards. –Roy Francis Kasten
